HOWARD-HARVARD HISTORY
This is the second time that the two historic institutions have met on the turf. In 2019, Harvard prevailed, 62-19, in Cambridge, Mass. But there is an important back story to the game.
In 1894, Howard embarked on starting a football program and rumor has it that a member of the HU faculty intervened and reached out to a member of the Harvard team, who gathered uniforms and sent them to Howard to help get the program off the ground.
LAST TIMEOUT
The Bison (1-4) are coming off a bye, following a disappointing 34-26 road loss to Yale (Oct. 1). In that game, Howard made numerous mistakes that stopped potential scoring drives in addition to having its poorest tackling game of the season.
"We spent a lot of time working on some of the fundamentals of tackling during the bye week," said Scott. "It proved to be a good week."
MATCHUP PREVIEW
Howard, which will be playing its first "home" game of the season in D.C. after being on the road for the first five contests.
"It is good to be playing in D.C.," said Scott. "It will be good to get to a different routine that does not involve road trips on buses and flights."
HOWARD
Offensively, Howard has been able to move the ball effectively, averaging almost 32 minutes on time of possession. The trio of junior
Jarett Hunter (Mineral, Va./59 carries, 238 yards, 3 TDs), senior
Ian Wheeler (Houston/33 carries, 187 yards, 2 TDs) and freshman
Eden James (Port St. Lucie, Fla./28 carries, 132 yards, TD) have helped the team average a respectable 136 yards on the ground. Senior quarterback
Quinton Williams (Upper Marlboro, Md./110-of-169, 1,172 yards, 6 TDs) has engineered seven scoring drives of 70 yards or more this season. His favorite target has been graduate
Antoine Murray (Miramar, Fla./25 receptions, 371 yards, 3 TDs). Junior wide receiver
Kasey Hawthorne (Sebring, Fla./17 catches, 167 yards, TD) and sophomore
Nah'shawn Hezekiah (Orangeburg, S.C./12 receptions, 156 yards, TD) have helped the passing attack average 240 yards per game.
On defense, the Bison are led by sophomore safety
Kenny Gallop, Jr. (Portsmouth, Va./34 tackles [22 solos], FF), sophomore linebacker
Terrance Hollon (Cleveland/31 tackles [18 solos], 2 interceptions), graduate defensive lineman
Jevin Jackson (Lawrenceville, Ga./17 tackles [7 solos], FF) and senior defensive lineman
Darren Brokenburr (Manassas, Va./17 tackles [8 solos]).
HARVARD
The Crimson (3-1) are coming off a 35-28 road win over Cornell last week.
Harvard is led on offense by senior running back Aidan Borguet (82 carries, 501 yards, 6 TDs), senior quarterback Charlie Dean (72 of 127, 915 yards, 8 TDs) and his favorite targets are senior wide receiver Kym Wimberly (29 receptions, 374 yards, 3 TDs) and sophomore Ledger Hatch (11 catches, 223 yards, TD).
"It is important that we give them some different looks on defense," said Scott. "They are very sound in what they do and they are very disciplined and well coached. We will have to play our best football."
The strength of the Harvard defense is its front, led by junior defensive tackle Thor Griffith (26 tackles, 6.5 tackles for losses, 2 sacks), senior defensive linemen Truman Jones (12 tackles, 6.0 tackles for losses, 3.0 sacks) and Nate Leskavec (13 tackles, 5.0 tackles for losses, 3.0 sacks).
