LEXINGTON, Ky. (January 29, 2022) – Howard University men's and women's track & field squads battled tough in their most challenging meet of the indoor season at the Rod McCravy Memorial Invitational, hosted by the University of Kentucky.
After a solid opening day, the Bison followed up with multiple standout individual performances.
A trio of Bison competed in the men's 60-meter hurdles semifinal, led by senior
Jermanie Byrd (Miami). The Miami native advanced to the final round after registering a non-automatic qualifying time of 7.99. Fellow classmate
Darian Clyburn (Louisville) and sophomore
Zachary Hawkins (Loganville, Ga.) also competed, but fell short of reaching short hurdle final.
In the final, Byrd finished sixth overall with a season-best 7.96 mark.
In the men's field events, throwers
Christopher Bratcher (Richmond, Va.) and
Nnamdi Olebara (Bowie, Md.) competed in the shot put, placing eighth (14.45 meters) and ninth (14.20 meters), respectively.
Freshman jumper
Chase Drewery (Waldorf, Md.) earned ninth place in the triple jump, leaping a personal best (14.88 meters).
On the women's side, senior
Jessica Wright (Durham, N.C.) and sophomore
Kaya-Rae Dunbar (Burtonsville, Md.) came up short in reaching the 60-meter hurdles final.
In the women's triple jump, reigning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Field Athlete of the Week freshman
Nikayla Fitzgerald (Kyle, Texas) took 14
th overall, hopping 10.96 meters.
On Feb. 11-12, the Bison take part in a pair of meets.
Howard goes to Virginia Beach, Va., for the Kenny Giles Invitational, hosted by Norfolk State University, and to Chicago for the Windy City Invite, hosted by the University of Chicago.
