It's Gameday, Howard faces Coppin State for Regular Season Finale

Howard concludes the regular season versus Coppin State in a pair of doubleheaders.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Howard University softball team will conclude the 2020-21 regular season versus Coppin State University on April 26 and April 28 in a pair of doubleheaders beginning at 1 p.m. at the Coppin State Softball Complex. 

Both squads have a slim chance of making the 2021 MEAC tournament and must sweep to keep their hopes alive. The MEAC, due to Covid concerns, is only bringing the top two in the Northern and Southern division to the tournament. 

SERIES: Coppin St. leads Howard 34-30

In the last ten matchups, Howard is 3-7. 

Howard defeated Coppin St. 2-0, April 22, 2019, in their final outing.

Howard

Howard (14-12, 7-8 MEAC) looks to conclude the regular season on a high note, goes into the contest versus the Lady Eagles with a four-game winning streak. 

Last time out:

The Howard University Bison showed out in MEAC conference action defeating South Carolina State University Lady Bulldogs 13-0 (5) and North Carolina A&T State University 3-2 (11) during the 2021 MEAC Softball Round-up at the Orangeburg Park Sports Complex. 

Quick Bits:

Howard's .296 batting average continues to lead the conference and ranks 58 in the NCAA. Camille Navarro .415 batting average ranks 66 in the nation and first in the MEAC. Navarro also leads the MEAC in doubles per game (.38) and toughest to strike out.

  • After seeing her career-high 17 games hit streak end at Norfolk State, she returns to streaking and scattering hits in nine straight games. 
  • Navarro is sporting a 28-game on-base streak.
  • Navarro and Dennis two-homerun in a game ranks number two in the NCAA.
  • Navarro batting average ranks first in the league.
  • Kiana Carr's 107 strikeouts (67 NCAA) and 7.6 strikeouts per game (101) rank first in MEAC.
  • Navarro saw her no-strikeout streak end versus Drexel going 20 straight games dating back to last season, a span of 80 at-bats. 
  • Carr pitched a no-hitter deep into the tenth inning before a North Carolina A&T homerun shattered the no-hitter. 
  • Carr was named pitcher of the week in back-to-back to week after pitch going 2-0 and breaking the school record for strikeouts in a game (12)

Coppin State

Coppin State (4-19, 4-7 MEAC) also went 3-0 during the 2021 MEAC Round-up. 

Vanessa Carrizosa tossed a no-hitter while Ashley Weimann and Haley Bravo drove in three runs apiece as the Coppin State softball team blanked South Carolina State, 8-0 on Sunday afternoon at Orangeburg Recreation Park. The Eagles swept all three of their Southern Division rivals to improve to 4-7 in MEAC play and keeping their tournament hopes alive. 

UP NEXT:

The Bison will have to sweep the Lady Eagles and wait next week for the final standings to see if Howard makes the 2021 MEAC Tournament.
