Women's Basketball Host UMBC Tonight in the Burr

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Howard University women's basketball team returns to Burr Gymnasium to face UMBC tonight for a 7 pm tipoff.

Game Notes

  • Today's matchup will be the third contest between HU and UMBC. The Bison holds a 2-0 record over the Retrievers; Howard defeated UMBC 72-61 in Baltimore in 2019. 
  • Head Coach Ty Grace is 1-0 versus UMBC. 
  • Howard looks to keep streaking. The Bison is 2-0 at home to start this season.
  • Three players scored in double figures for Howard versus GW; Kaiyah Creek led the offensive attack recording a team-high scoring 12-points, Krislyn Marsh recorded 11 points, and Iyanna Warren scored 10 points.
  • The MEAC named Destiny Howell Player of the Week after averaging 19.0 points per game in a pair of wins for the Bison this past week, going a combined 14-for-28 (.500) from the floor and knocking down three 3-pointers in each game. She opened the week with a career-high 21 points against Loyola (Md.), going 7-for-12 from the floor, before dropping 17 points and hitting the game-winner in overtime against Hofstra.

 

About the Bison
 

  •  The 2020-21 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division Champions fell in the finals of the 2021 conference tournament. However, the Bison took the league by storm last season. Despite the pandemic, Howard went 10-2 in conference play and 15-4, with non-conference wins versus LaSalle, George Washington, Mt. Saint Mary's, and Richmond. 
  • The Bison were selected No. 1 in the MEAC Preseason Poll.
  • Three Bison was named the Preseason All-MEAC Team, Anzhane' HuttonKaiya Creek, and Iyanna Warren.
  • Howard head coach Ty Grace enters her seventh season at the helm, named 2020-21 MEAC Coach of the Year. 
  • The Bison only lost one starter from last season's team. 
  • Last season, Howard posted the best regular-season winning percentage (.823) in school history. In addition, the Bison's defense ranked sixth nationally in field-goal percentage defense (33.9) and three-point field goal defense (25.6). Howard's 28.9 defensive rebounds ranked 30th in the NCAA led by 2020-21 Rookie of the Year Anzhane' Hutton. Hutton was also named to the All-MEAC second team, All-Rookie, and All-Defensive team.

Three players scored in double figures for Howard, but GW's solid second and fourth quarter was the difference as the Bison fell to Colonials Sunday afternoon at Charles E. Smith Center. 

Kaiyah Creek led the offensive attack recording a team-high scoring 12-points, Krislyn Marsh recorded 11 points, and Iyanna Warren scored 10 points.

Marsh recorded four blocks and nine rebounds.

About the Retrievers
 

•UMBC comes into the contest dropping seven straight.

•Graduate student guard Danae Marquez (Fresno, Calif.) knocked down six treys, including four in the fourth quarter, but a Retriever rally came up just short in a 62-55 setback to visiting Lafayette on Thursday night.• UMBC cut an 11-point fourth quarter deficit to 58-55 on graduate student forward Janee'a Summers' (Bound Brook, N.J.) trey with 1:44 remaining. But Lafayette (4-5) broke right back down the court and scored on a layup ten seconds later and added two free throws with 40 seconds left for the final margin of victory.• Summers added 17 points and moved past three players and into 18th place on UMBC's all-time scoring list with 1,049 points. • Graduate student post Onome-Juliet Esadah (Warri, Delta State, Nigeria) contributed 10 points for the Retrievers.
