Trio of Bison Earn MEAC Volleyball Postseason Recognition

Bria Woodard named MEAC Rookie of the Year

NORFOLK, Va. (November 16, 2021) – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) unveiled its 2021 women's volleyball postseason honors where Howard University saw three Bison recognized. The announcement came Tuesday afternoon.
 
Freshman standout Bria Woodard (Missouri City, Texas) headlined the Bison, winning the league's Rookie of the Year award, along with All-MEAC First Team and All-Rookie honors. Fellow classmate and sister Cimone Woodard (Missouri City, Texas) was named All-MEAC Second Team and All-Rookie Team while third-year Bison Tamar Wells (Apopka, Fla.) also received Second Team recognition.
 
This season, B. Woodard ranked eighth in the MEAC in both kills (2.65) and points per set (3.14), respectively. She reached double-digit kills 13 times, including a season-best 19 against Harvard (Sept. 17) while recording four double-doubles. She was named MEAC Rookie of the Week twice (Aug. 30 & Nov. 8).
 
Like her sister, C. Woodard earned the conference's Rookie of the Week honor twice (Oct. 18 & Nov. 1). She topped the league in hitting percentage (.348) while finishing eighth overall in blocks per set (0.76). On the season, the Texas native recorded six double-digit kill performances, including a season-high 17 versus American (Sept. 21).
 
Wells, 2019 MEAC Rookie of the Year, ended the regular season with 133 kills (3rd on the team) and 60 total blocks (2nd on the team). This year, the Florida native recorded a double-double (10 kills & 10 blocks) in the road win at Maryland Eastern Shore, which earned her the league's Defensive Player of the Week (Oct. 25).
 
Coppin State's Miajavon Coleman was named MEAC Player of the Year while teammate Ashley Roman earned Co-Setter of the Year, alongside North Carolina Central's Lauren Janok, and Defensive Player of the Year, respectively. Delaware State's Dr. Bruce Atkinson took home Coach of the Year.
 
On Nov. 19-21, Howard hosts the 2021 MEAC Volleyball Championship inside Burr Gymnasium. HU serves as the No. 1 seed and will take on No. 8 South Carolina State in the Quarterfinal Rounds. Match time is set for 11 a.m.
