Women's Basketball set to Face North Texas

DENTON, TX -- Howard (0-1) concludes the Bison's Texas road trip versus North Texas inside the Super Pit Center for their second game of the opening week. 

The Bison will retake the floor for a 7:30 pm (EST) tip on ESPN+ against the Mean Green, their first trip to Texas since playing Baylor in Waco, Texas, in November of 2011. Howard is coming off an 80-48 loss against Houston on Tuesday.

  • Thursday matchup is the first regular-season meeting between the two women's basketball programs.
  • Howard's 24 turnovers were the most turnover since committing 25 turnovers in an 82-53 loss to #24 South Florida.

About the Bison

  •  The 2020-21 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division Champions fell in the finals of the 2021 conference tournament. However, the Bison took the league by storm last season. Despite the pandemic, Howard went 10-2 in conference play and 15-4, with non-conference wins versus LaSalle, George Washington, Mt. Saint Mary's, and Richmond. 
  • The Bison were selected No. 1 in the MEAC Preseason Poll.
  • Three Bison was named to the Preseason All-MEAC Team, Anzhane' HuttonKaiya Creek, and Iyanna Warren.
  • Howard head coach Ty Grace enters her seventh season at the helm, named 2020-21 MEAC Coach of the Year. 
  • The Bison only lost one starter from last season's team. 
  • Howard posted the best regular-season winning percentage (.823) in school history last season. In addition, the Bison's defense ranked sixth nationally in field-goal percentage defense (33.9) and three-point field goal defense (25.6). Howard's 28.9 defensive rebounds ranked 30th in the NCAA led by 2020-21 Rookie of the Year Anzhane' Hutton. Hutton was also named to the All-MEAC second team, All-Rookie, and All-Defensive team.

The Howard University women's basketball team dropped their first official matchup of the season against the Houston Cougars on Tuesday night at the Fertitta Center.

Hutton led the Bison offensively, recording nine points [3-of-8 from the floor] and bringing down five rebounds. Kaniyah Harris recorded a team-high seven rebounds. Iyanna Warren dished out a game-high four assists. 

About the Mean Green

  • North Texas finished last season, 13-7. 
  • Quincy Noble was named Conference USA POY. 
  • North Texas was voted to finish third in Conference USA. 
  • The Mean Green defeated the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, 93-58. 
  • UNT bench accounted for 44 points.
