Women’s Basketball Hosts Coppin State Saturday & Sunday

Bison begin a six-game home stand against Eagles

WASHINGTON (January 15, 2021) – Howard University women's basketball team opens its six-game home stand against Coppin State (CSU) for a two-game series (Jan. 16-17) inside Burr Gymnasium. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. both days.

HOWARD
 
HU (5-2, 1-1 MEAC) looks to grab the upper hand in the conference standings and create separation.
 
Offensively, Howard ranks second in the league with 71.3 ppg while, defensively, topping the conference in blocks (5.9 bpg).
 
Senior guard Jayla Thornton (Newark, N.J.) leads the club in scoring, posting 15.3 ppg, which is fourth in the league. The New Jersey native is only 14 made three-pointers away from becoming the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) All-Time Three-Point Field Goals Made Scoring Leader.
 
Newcomer Anzhane' Hutton (Cedar Hill, Texas) and sophomore Iyanna Warren (Accokeek, Md.) leads the MEAC in rebounding (9.0 rpg) and assists (5.1 apg), respectively.
 
COPPIN STATE
 
CSU (1-3, 1-1 MEAC) enters the weekend playing only four contests. Coppin State opened league play with a split versus Delaware State (Jan. 2-3).
 
Aliyah Lawson leads the Eagles in scoring (14.3 ppg).
 
LAST TIMEOUT
 
On Jan. 2-3, HU split with rival Morgan State in Baltimore.
 
Saturday (Jan. 2), the Bison rolled past Morgan State, 73-48, in their MEAC opener. Thornton led the Bison attack, scoring a game-high 21 points.
 
On Jan. 3, the Bison committed a season-high 31 turnovers in the 58-71 loss at Morgan State inside the Hill Field House. Warren led the way, tying a career-best 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting before fouling out.
 
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
 
On Jan. 30-31, HU continues its home stretch with a pair of matchups against Delaware State. Both days are scheduled for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
