COLUMBIA, S.C. (February 8, 2020) – Howard University men's track & field team took part in the challenging South Carolina Invitational, hosted by the Gamecocks, where they had several bright spots throughout the two-day event (Feb. 7-8).
"This weekend was the best competition I've ever been a part of in my tenure as a coach at Howard [University]," said Howard Director of Track & Field
David Oliver. "Top to bottom, we produced the best set of results the track and field program has seen in the modern era. The group really stepped up and met the challenges they faced internally and externally at this high-level event."
Second-year runner
Gavin Williams (Dover, Del.) led the way with another outstanding performance, missing the mile run school record by hundredths of a second (4:18.27).
Fellow classmate
Jermanie Byrd (Miami) fell short in reaching the 60-meter hurdles finals but tied a personal best (8.10).
Byrd also competed in the men's 200-meter dash where he qualified for the 2020 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Indoor Championships in Landover, Md.
He joins fellow South Florida native
Kameron Davis (Miami), who ran a personal best in the 200-meter dash (22.02), in Landover. Both Bison will take part in the 60 hurdles and 200-meter at the indoor conference championships.
"We had another up and down weekend with the men," said Director Oliver. "But the bright spots really shined [and] we're still a work in progress. We came down with a very inexperienced group, but they're starting to find their groove."
On Feb. 14-15, HU travels to Lynchburg, Va., for the Darius Dixon Invitational, hosted by Liberty. The final tune-up before championship season.
"With the [Mid-Eastern Athletic] conference meet at the end of this month, we should see a marked improvement over previous editions," Director Oliver ended. "We're really looking forward to it."
