Men’s Swimming & Diving Shatters Four More Records at the CCSA Championships

Eight school records broken in two days

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (February 20, 2020) – Howard University men's swimming & diving team continues to reset the school's record book at the 2020 Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) Championships, shattering four more milestones.

In two days, the Bison have taken down eight benchmarks, including seven on the men's side.

Freshman Luke-Kennedy Thompson (Nassau, Bahamas) led the way, breaking the program's 200 IM mark twice on Day Two. The morning session saw Thompson (1:54.24) eclipses Miguel Orellana's previous record (1:55.71), which he set more than a decade ago in 2009. That evening, the Bahama native shattered his own milestone with a 1:52.29 time.

Fellow classmate Miles Simon (Atlanta) also competed in the 200 IM where he posted the fourth-best time in school history, clocking in at 1:56.02. Despite that achievement, his highlight on the afternoon came in the men's 100 IM with a new program record (51.68), a milestone set the day before by teammate T'lez Foulkes (Durham, N.C.).

Foulkes also took part in the 200 IM, finishing with the 10th-fastest time in program history (1:58.16).

The 200 Free Relay squad of senior Maalik Nixon (Peachtree City, Ga.), juniors Kegan Ford (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago) and William Speakman Smith II (Jacksonville, Fla.) and freshman Mark-Anthony Beckles (Chaguanas, Trinidad & Tobago) placed fourth overall with a record-setting performance, recording a 1:22.13 mark.

In that same event, Beckles registered the fourth-best mark in school history with a split time of 20.79. He also landed in the program's record book two more occasions in the 50 Free, producing the third (20.78) and sixth (20.90) fastest times.

Ford tied Beckles with the sixth-best time in the 50 Free while setting the seventh-fastest (20.91) in the same event.

After two days, HU men sit sixth with 103 points at the midway point.

The action continues Friday (Feb. 21) with more events held inside the Allan Jones Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Tennessee.
