Howard Softball to Host Local Non-Conference Opponent Bowie State


WASHINGTON (April 2, 2019) - Howard softball will take on Bowie State at home tomorrow, April 3. This will be their last game scheduled for this week. First pitch is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Washington Nationals Youth Academy. The Bowie State Bulldogs will be the third Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference (MEAC) opponent of the season for Howard.

LAST TIMEOUT
The Bison are currently 3-1 in the MEAC and off to their best conference start in nine seasons. In their recent series against the Delaware State Hornets, Howard took the series, 2-1. It was the first series win against the Hornets since 2010.

Currently, the team is sitting impressively in national ranking categories.  Howard is ranked seventh in doubles per game and 94 in batting average.

Three Bison are ranked in the top 150 in batting average: Kalita Dennis (24), Xzarria Simmons (61), and Camille Navarro (84). Navarro is fifth in the nation in toughest to strike out and Simmons is number 23. Dennis also ranks 81 in slugging percentage.

Both Simmons and Dennis rank in the top 150 in on-base percentage, 84 and 105, respectively.  

SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
After 19 games, the Bulldogs have a current record of 4-15. Their MEAC conference record is currently 4-7. Despite their losing streak, the Bulldogs beat Virginia Union University, 7-3, last Sunday. Madison Margas, leads the team with a .714 batting average. She received five hits in her game against Virginia Union University. Kristina Hawke batted a .571 on the afternoon, while Shanya Gordon and Amya Ferguson batted .500.
A win against the Bulldogs will give the Bison its highest win total in three seasons.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE
The Bison are set to play again next Tuesday, April 9 against Towson University. First pitch is set for 7:30 p.m.
