WASHINGTON (November 8, 2019) – Howard University women's volleyball team returned to The Burr with a dominating performance over Delaware State (DSU), winning in straight sets (25-8, 25-22, 25-14).
With the win, HU (14-12, 11-1 MEAC) is only one win away from clinching the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division crown for the second consecutive season.
"We played well for most of the night," said Howard women's volleyball head coach
Shaun Kupferberg. "I think we are starting to understand what it takes to be successful. If we can get the consistency on Sunday [versus Maryland Eastern Shore], then we can start to feel more confident."
Sophomore
Kailyn Williams (Arlington, Texas) led the Bison attack with a match-leading 12 kills and four blocks in the win.
Howard set the tone from start to finish. After a dominating 25-8 effort in the opening set, HU found themselves deadlocked at 22 in game two; however, a pair of errors from the Lady Hornets and a kill by newcomer
Tamar Wells (Apopka, Fla.) propelled the Bison to a commanding 2-0 match lead.
After a five-minute intermission, the Bison refocused and took set three easily, 25-14.
Wells and redshirt sophomore
Marcelle Butler (Canton, Ga.) had nine kills apiece while freshmen setters
Semira Blair (Fort Worth, Texas) and
Kayla Diaz (Nanuet, N.Y.) added 19 assists each in the victory.
For DSU (10-17, 5-7 MEAC), Jordan Vang had a team-best six kills in the loss.
Sunday (Nov. 10), the Bison meet Maryland Eastern Shore at 1 p.m. inside Burr Gymnasium.
