Howard Volleyball Grabs Third Straight Win

Bison down Maryland Eastern Shore in straight sets

WASHINGTON (November 10, 2019) – Howard University women's volleyball team secured its third straight win after downing Maryland Eastern Shore in straight sets (29-27, 25-22, 25-19) inside Burr Gymnasium.

With the victory, HU improved to 15-12 (12-1 MEAC) overall and at least a share of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division crown.

Howard eclipsed a .300 hitting percentage, led by redshirt sophomore Marcelle Butler (Canton, Ga.) with a match-leading 12 kills and .360 hitting percentage.

The opening set saw both squads going back-and-forth until consecutive kills from Butler down the stretch gave HU a 1-0 match lead.

Howard recorded a match-best .409 hitting percentage, but Maryland Eastern Shore tied the contest at 20-20 after a kill from Alexis Lee. HU outscored the Hawks, 5-2, including a pair of kills by junior Jurnee Tipton (Ypsilanti, Mich.) and newcomer Macy Witt-Nobles (Rosharon, Texas) to secure a game two win and take a commanding 2-0 match advantage.

Maryland Eastern Shore refused to go away in set three, tying the game at 12 apiece. Despite the Hawks' effort, Howard took control and delivered 15 kills and three service aces to close out the match.

HU produced 12 service aces, led by Tipton with five.

Freshman Kayla Diaz (Nanuet, N.Y.) had a career-high 35 assists in the victory.

For the Hawks (11-17, 6-7 MEAC), Lee registered a team-leading 12 kills in the loss.

Tuesday (Nov. 12), Howard goes to Norfolk, Va., for their final road test of the year at Norfolk State. Match time is slated for 6 p.m.
