BALTIMORE (November 20, 2019) – Howard University women's basketball team grabbed a big road win at Loyola (Md.), 75-69, and improved to 3-1 on the season.
Five Bison scored in double figures, led by senior guard
Sarah Edmond (Freeport, N.Y.) with a game-high 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including 4-of-6 from long range.
"Tonight, was a good road win," said Howard women's basketball head coach
Ty Grace. "We didn't particularly take care of the ball, but we made some defensive adjustments after halftime that disturbed Loyola's offense. We made layups and free throws down the stretch that sealed the win."
Both squads were deadlocked at 11 until Edmond connected on a trey ball and gave HU a three-point advantage with less than a minute to go in the opening period, but a pair of freebies from the Greyhounds' Alexis Gray cut the margin to one after the first quarter, 14-13.
Loyola started the second period with a 9-2 run, 16-22, but the Bison clawed their way back and regained the lead after a three-point play by sophomore
Gia Thorpe (Pittsburgh, Pa.), 28-27.
In the waning moments of the first half, freshman
Brooklyn Fort-Davis (Chicago) drilled two free throws and extended HU's lead, 32-29.
"We took the lead, but the careless turnovers allowed them back in the game," Grace continued. "We must continue get better on the defensive end of the floor and we will [get better]."
After intermission, both clubs went back-and-forth until the Greyhounds took their largest lead of the game with more than two minutes left in the third, 39-46. At that point, the Bison fought back and closed the period on an 8-3 spurt, capped off by a jumper from newcomer
Iyanna Warren (Accokeek, Md.), 47-49.
Howard's momentum continued into the fourth, outscoring Loyola 28-20 on 73-percent shooting (8-of-11), including a perfect 3-of-3 from downtown, in the quarter.
Second-year forward
Krislyn Marsh (Duncanville, Texas) produced her first double-double of the season, racking up 13 points and 11 boards.
Senior guard
Ayonna Williams (Washington) filled the stat line, recording 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Howard scored 29 points off the bench, led by Thorpe and senior forward
Imani Bryant (Berkeley, Calif.) combining for 21 points in the win.
For Loyola (1-3), Delaney Connolly had team-leading 15 points while Stephanie Karcz notched a double-double (12 points and 11 boards) in the loss.
Sunday (Nov. 24), HU goes to Hempstead, N.Y. to face Hofstra. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m.
