Bison extend winning streak to three

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (November 24, 2019) – Howard University women's basketball team defeated Hofstra, 73-64, inside the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.

With the win, HU (4-2) picked up back-to-back road victories for the first time this season while extending their winning streak to three.

Senior guard and New York native Sarah Edmond (Freeport) led the Bison attack with her first double-double of the season, posting 18 points (game-high) and 10 rebounds.

HU pounced on the Pride early, shooting over 56-percent (9-of-16) from the field in the opening quarter and took a nine-point advantage, thanks to a layup from senior guard Ayonna Williams (Washington), 22-13.

Howard's momentum continued into the second period, grabbing their largest lead of the contest at the 5:30 mark after a layup by junior forward Curstyn Moore (Mount Vernon, N.Y.), 35-19.

Hofstra fought their way back into the game and finished the half on a 15-5 run, capped off by a trey ball from Ana Hernandez Gil, 40-34.

HU pushed the margin back to double figures after intermission, but the Pride outscored Howard in the period, 14-17, and sliced the deficit down to three going into the fourth, 54-51.

With more than seven minutes left in regulation, Hofstra took the lead after a long ball by Sorelle Ineza, 60-61, but Howard quickly recaptured the lead at the 6:34 mark, 62-61. From that point on, HU closed out the game on a 12-3 spurt to secure their third straight win.

Williams had 15 points, six dimes and five boards while third-year guard Jayla Thornton (Newark, N.J.) added 16 points, including four trey balls in the victory.

For Hofstra (1-4), four Pride reached double figures, led by Jalen Hines with a double-double (17 points and 13 rebounds) in the loss.

HU concludes its four-game road trip in San Juan Puerto Rico for the San Juan Shootout.
