WASHINGTON (November 17, 2019) – Howard University women's basketball team secured their first home win of the season after running past Saint Peter's (SPU), 92-80, inside Burr Gymnasium.
With the win, the Bison moved to .500 (2-2) on the young season while the Peacocks dropped to 2-2.
Five Bison scored in double figures, led by freshman forward
Brooklyn Fort-Davis (Chicago) and veteran guard
Sarah Edmond (Freeport, N.Y.). The Chicago native recorded her first career double-double with 16 points and 13 boards while Edmond added 16 points and three steals in the win.
In the first quarter, sophomore guard
Gia Thorpe (Pittsburgh, Pa.) jumped started the Bison attack, scoring seven points on 3-of-3 shooting. The Pittsburgh product connect on a trey ball and give HU its first lead of the game at the 3:24 mark.
Despite SPU shooting 58-percent (7-of-12) in the second quarter, Howard used the long ball as the great equalizer, splashing six three-pointers. Third-year sharpshooter
Jayla Thornton (Newark, N.J.) went 4-of-6 from beyond the arc, scoring all 12 points before intermission and giving HU a 46-38 advantage at the break.
HU pulled away after halftime, outscoring the Peacocks, 27-15, and taking a double-digit lead into the fourth, 73-53.
The Peacocks opened the fourth quarter with a quick 9-1 run, but the Bison withstood Saint Peter's late charge.
The Bison played great team ball while controlling the glass. HU outrebounded the Peacocks, 47-33, and shot a respectable 46-percent (31-of-68) from the floor, including 62-percent (8-of-13) from downtown.
Thorpe finished with 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field while fellow classmate
Krislyn Marsh (Duncanville, Texas) added 10 points and seven rebounds in the win.
Saint Peter's guards Taiah Thornton and Gabrielle Harris led their attack with 18 points each.
This is the Bison's second time beating the Peacocks at home since their meeting in 2004.
The Bison head back on the road to play Loyola (Md.) Wednesday (Nov. 20) at 6 p.m. in the Reitz Arena.
