WASHINGTON (November 15, 2019) – Howard University women's volleyball team ended the regular season setting a new benchmark in the straight set victory over South Carolina State (25-13, 25-13, 25-11) inside Burr Gymnasium.
HU (17-12, 14-1 MEAC) registered a new program record .566 hitting percentage, shattering the previous mark set a week ago versus Delaware State (Nov. 8) at .455.
Junior
Myca Mitchell (Clovis, Calif.) led the Bison attack with a team-leading nine kills.
Howard set the tone in set one, producing a .600 hitting percentage. Mitchell and senior
Kira Porter (Lake Tahoe, Nev.) combined for seven kills in the game one victory.
HU's momentum continued in set two, manufacturing a .583 hitting percentage while the Lady Bulldogs hit a -.143.
South Carolina State (SCSU) showed fight in game three, but the Bison would be too much, hitting .524 with only two attack errors.
Porter had seven kills with an incredible .778 hitting percentage while redshirt sophomores
Marcelle Butler (Canton, Ga.) and
Ana Williams (Baker, La.) posted four kills apiece. The Louisiana native also recorded a match-best six blocks (four solo) in the win.
Freshman setter
Kayla Diaz (Nanuet, N.Y.) racked up a match-high 25 assists, five digs and three service aces in the victory.
Before Friday's match, Porter and fellow classmate
Jurnee Farrell (Englewood, Colo.) were recognized for their hard work and dedication to the women's volleyball program.
For SCSU (0-27, 0-13 MEAC), Alexus Holt collected a match-leading 11 kills while Jenai King added 20 assists in the loss.
On Nov. 22-24, HU hosts the 2019 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Women's Volleyball Tournament inside Burr Gymnasium.
