WASHINGTON (November 22, 2019) – Howard University women's volleyball team advanced to the 2019 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament Semifinals after eliminating the South Carolina State (SCSU) Lady Bulldogs in three sets (25-12, 25-23, 25-18) inside Burr Gymnasium.
With the victory, HU (18-12) meets Coppin State Saturday (Nov. 23) at 5 p.m.
"I thought our team played pretty well," Howard head coach
Shaun Kupferberg said. "It's been quite a few days since we last played; we've had a little bit of a layoff and I think we were able to transfer some of the stuff we've worked on in practice into the game."
Junior
Myca Mitchell (Clovis, Calif.) and freshman
Asha Johnson (Oakland, Calif.) led the Bison attack with seven kills apiece while newcomer
Semira Blair (Fort Worth, Texas) registered a double-double (11 assists and 10 digs) in the victory.
Howard took set one after recording a match-best .348 hitting percentage, led Johnson and 2019 MEAC Rookie of the Year
Tamar Wells (Apopka, Fla.).
South Carolina State kept game two close, but the Bison kept SCSU at bay and took a commanding 2-0 match lead.
SCSU held the upper hand early in set three, but Johnson and sophomore
Kailyn Williams (Arlington, Texas) rallied HU with four kills each to win the match in three.
Freshman setter
Kayla Diaz (Nanuet, N.Y.) produced a team-high 21 assists whereas, defensively, third-year libero
Fola Wilson (Minneapolis) registered 10 digs in the win.
For SCSU, Alexus Holt had match-high 15 kills in a losing effort.
Admission for the tournament is $10 each day and $25 for all three days.
