WASHINGTON (October 13, 2019) – Howard University women's volleyball team took down Coppin State (CSU) in straight sets (25-22, 26-24, 25-21) inside Burr Gymnasium.
With the win, HU (9-11) remains unbeaten in league play (6-0).
Redshirt sophomore
Marcelle Butler (Canton, Ga.) led the way with a match-high 12 kills, followed by third-year outside hitter
Jurnee Tipton (Ypsilanti, Mich.) collecting 11 kills with a .350 hitting percentage.
After grabbing set one, Howard held the upper hand in game two. HU had a 24-22 advantage, but Coppin State tied the set with a kill and block, 24-24. Moments later, Tipton and sophomore
Kailyn Williams (Arlington, Texas) delivered back-to-back kills and gave the Bison a 2-0 match lead.
Set three saw HU jump out to a 5-0 advantage, but CSU tied the game at six. From that point, Howard regained control after a pair of kills from Tipton and Butler and blocks by Tipton and freshman
Tamar Wells (Apopka, Fla.).
Defensively, junior
Fola Wilson (Minneapolis) registered a match-leading 17 digs while Wells added eight blocks (two solo). Setters
Semira Blair (Fort Worth, Texas) and
Kayla Diaz (Nanuet, N.Y.) combined for 28 assists in the victory.
For Coppin State (7-13, 3-3 MEAC), Sydney Hicks had a team-best seven kills in the loss.
Friday (Oct. 18), the Bison continue their home stand inside Burr Gymnasium against Norfolk State. Match time is slated for 6 p.m.
