BALTIMORE (January 5, 2019) – Howard University sophomore diver
Christian Nickolas (Brentwood, Calif.) continued her momentum into the new year at UMBC where she scored a new personal best in the women's 1-meter dive (269.55), eclipsing her previous mark that qualified her for the 2019 NCAA Diving Championships (266.55). With her efforts, she grabbed her fifth victory of the season in that event.
Furthermore, the California native placed second in the 3-meter dive after recording a season-best (217.20).
Despite her impressive performances, Howard men's & women's swimming & diving teams were swept by the Retrievers. The men fell, 134-114, and the women, 138-115.
On the women's side, senior and future Olympian
Latroya Pina (Seeknok, Mass.) won the women's 100 yard Breaststroke, posting a 1:10.72 time. She also claimed second in the 200 IM, registering a 2:24.69 mark.
Newcomer
India Jackson (Philadelphia) finished behind Pina in the 100 Breast, clocking in at 1:10.82. The Philadelphia native also took second in the 50 Breast (31.77).
Senior
KaSandra Kaplan (Detroit) earned a second-place finish (24.65) in the women's 50 Freestyle after being edged out by UMBC's Emily Vance (24.38). Additionally, she turned in a runner-up performance in the 100 Butterfly (59.47).
For the men, they had several second-place finishes; however, sophomore swimmer
Jon Bendana (Bowie, Md.) won the men's 200 IM with a 2:05.23 time. The Maryland product also took second in the 1000 Free, recording a 11:04.62 mark.
