UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (January 25-26, 2019) – Howard University men's & women's track and field squads held their own at the Penn State National Open, hosted by the Nittany Lions. The two-day, 32-team event took place at the Multi-Sport Facility & Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track.
Over the weekend, Howard added another Bison to championship season in the women's weight throw.
Newcomer
Diana Effiom became the 11
th Bison to qualify for the 2019 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Indoor Championships in Landover, Md. after tossing 14.79m (48'5"), falling just short of breaking the school mark held by senior
Mi-ah Watkins (Bronx, N.Y.) at 14.83m (48'7").
Senior
Kenneth Chigbue (Bowie, Md.) and sophomore
Destiny Stanford (Woolwhich Township, N.J.) already punched their tickets to Landover; however, qualified in two separate events over the weekend.
Chigbue, who qualified for the men's 60-meter dash, also made the 200 dash, clocking in at a personal best (22.16). Stanford earned a spot in the women's mile run with a 5:07.38 time after making the 3000-meter run back in December.
Senior
Tariq Fullerton (Kingston, Jamaica) and sophomore
Anthony Gordon (Clinton, Md.) each registered season bests in the men's 800-meter but fell just shy of reaching the conference championship. Fullerton ran a 1:55.70 while Gordon tenths behind (1:55.92).
Junior
Uchechi Onuoha (Yardly, Pa.) continues her solid indoor season in the 60-meter hurdles, falling short of reaching the finals in University Park by one-hundredths of a second (8.69).
In the field, sophomores
Nathaniel Are (Chicago) and
Rachel Edler (Stone Mountain, Ga.) competed in their respective triple jumps. Are set a new personal best (13.56m; 44'4") while Edler placed eighth in the event, jumping 11.77m (38'6").

Saturday (Feb. 2), Director of Track and Field
David Oliver and the Bison travel to Lynchburg, Va. for the Liberty Flames Invite, hosted by Liberty. The meet starts 9 a.m.
