@HowardUniSB Closes Out Season at Coppin State

Bison look to finish 2018 campaign on a high note

WASHINGTON (May 1, 2018) – In their final game of the 2018 season, Coach Lauren McCoy and the Howard University Softball team look to finish the year on a high note as they face Coppin State (CSU) in Baltimore.

Wednesday's rubber match starts 4:30 p.m. at CSU Softball Field.

MATCHUP PREVIEW

On April 6, the Bison split its Friday doubleheader at CSU. HU dropped game one, 7-3, but bounced back with a 16-6 victory in the nightcap. In the nightcap, senior Brooklyn Emory provided the big bat, going 3-of-5 with five RBIs and two homers in the victory.

That Monday (April 9), freshman outfielder Trinity Gibbs was selected Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Co-Rookie of the Week after the performance at CSU.

Since then, Howard (8-36, 6-11 MEAC) has struggled, dropping their last seven out of 11; however, currently, the Bison are riding its longest winning streak of the season after sweeping Maryland Eastern Shore. HU enters Wednesday's contest looking to finish the season strong after being mathematically eliminated from postseason play.

Gibbs (.344) and sophomore Kamryn Tillman (.337) ranks first and second, respectively, on the squad in batting average while newcomer Breanna Robinson, reigning MEAC Co-Rookie of the Week, is hitting .327 in league play.

For CSU (13-22, 9-8 MEAC), they sit fifth in the MEAC Northern Division with a win-or-go home scenario against the Bison. With a victory, the Eagles clinch a postseason berth as they hold the tiebreaker over Norfolk State. Win a loss, Coppin State's playoff hopes come to an end.

LAST TIMEOUT

On April 28, the Bison swept Saturday's doubleheader at Maryland Eastern Shore. HU won game one, 3-1, and then rallied from an early deficit to win game two, 8-3.

In game one, redshirt junior Mackenzi Steele tossed a gem as she went seven innings while tying a season-high nine strikeouts in the victory. In the nightcap, Emory led the attack, going a perfect 3-of-3 with two doubles and a walk in the win.

The next day (April 29), Howard pulled away from Maryland Eastern Shore to complete the season sweep, 8-3. Four Bison registered multi-hit performances, led by redshirt freshman Zaria Hall and newcomer Alyssa Lavine each with three.
