Howard opens MEAC Play with a three-game series against Lady Pirates

WASHINGTON (March 22, 2018) – After nearly two weeks away from the diamond, Coach Lauren McCoy and the Howard University Softball team start Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play against rival Hampton.
 
Due to upcoming inclement weather, the three-game series begins Friday (March 23) with a single, seven-inning contest at 4 p.m. Saturday's (March 24) doubleheader has been moved up, beginning at 11:30 a.m.

MATCHUP PREVIEW
 
HU (2-21) seeks to get back on track after going winless at the Lobo Classic. Junior Jasmine Gibson and freshman Trinity Gibbs leads the club hitting with a .286 batting average. Senior Brooklyn Emory and rookie Alyssa Lavine provide the power, combining for five homers this season.
 
Hampton (11-13) enters the weekend winning four of their last five contests, including two-out-of-three versus Morgan State. Offensively, the Lady Pirates are led by junior DaSha Hill, who is batting .492 at the plate. In the circle, junior Allyson Babinsack spearheads the pitching staff after being selected MEAC Co-Pitcher of the Week Monday.
 
LAST TIMEOUT
 
HU was unable to grab a victory (0-5) at the Lobo Classic, hosted by New Mexico.
 
Friday (March 9), Howard fell to St. Mary's in five, 11-1, then lost the nightcap against Sacramento State, 9-1. In game one, freshman Breanna Robinson went 2-of-3 at the plate.
 
The next day (March 10), HU lost its second bout with Sacramento State, 17-1, and then took on the host team, New Mexico, where they fell by the identical score, 17-1. Emory belted a solo shot to right center in game two.
 
On the final day (March 11), Howard dropped its final contest at the Lobo Classic with a 11-3 loss against St. Mary's. Emory and Robinson provided sparks for the Bison attack, each delivering homers in a losing effort.
 
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
 
Tuesday (March 27), the Bison host Drexel in the home opener. The nonconference doubleheader begins 11 a.m. at Nationals Youth Academy.
