WASHINGTON -- The Howard University women's basketball team returns home on Wednesday to battle the George Mason Patriots. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Burr Gymnasium.
LAST TIMEOUT
The Bison improved to 3-2 on Sunday after a road win against the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights, 77-58. They led for much of the game, outscoring the Knights in each of the first three quarters.
For just the second time this season, no Bison player scored 20 points. Instead, the team distributed the offense, with each of the five starters, scoring at least nine points. Sophomore
Jayla Thornton led the Bison, with 16 points on four three-point field goals made. Junior
Sarah Edmond added 15 points and seven assists, while freshman
Krislyn Marsh contributed 14 points and six rebounds.
SERIES
Despite being located within 20 miles of each other, Howard and George Mason have not played each other since 2009. The Bison have an 8-14 record all-time against the Patriots, with their last victory against George Mason coming in 1990.
GAME PREVIEW
Both teams are looking to win their second straight game with the match on Wednesday. George Mason is second in the Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) standings with a 4-2 record on the season. Howard, with a 3-2 record, currently leads the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) standings, alongside the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats.
The Bison have already defeated one A-10 opponent this season, with a 57-54 win against the La Salle Explorers to open the season.
Since their season opener, Howard has scored at least 75 points in four of their last five games. Statistically, the Bison have the edge against the Patriots in points (73.9-71.7), rebounds (47.6-45.2) and assists (14.8-13.5). The Patriots scored a season-high 91 points in their last outing against the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) Kangaroos. The leading scorer for the Patriots is sophomore Nicole Cardaño-Hillary, who is averaging 21.3 points per game. For the Bison,
Sarah Edmond leads the scoring at 19.6 points per game. Freshman
Krislyn Marsh is having a solid collegiate start averaging 9.4 points and 10.2 rebounds per game.
