Princess Anne, Md. (Oct. 8, 2018) --- Continuing its conference winning streak, Howard University (HU) volleyball defeated the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Â in three sets, 25-15, 25-17, 25-22.
The Bison (11-9, 4-0 MEAC) began the first set on a 5-0 run that the Hawks (5-12, 2-1 MEAC) could not recover from. Howard was .423 on the attack. They held UMES to .115 hitting percentage. HU dominated the entire set, winning it, 25-15.
In set two the Hawks kept the game close, tying it 7-7 before the Bison broke away. Howard would score three points in a row that put them up 10-7. A combination of the Bison's explosive playing style and Hawks error put the Bison in a position where the Hawks could not catch up. HU took the set, 25-17.
UMES made adjustments in the third set to bring the Bison more competitive play. There were back and forth leads throughout the set with the Hawks leading 22-21 before the Bison scored the final four points to win the set and the game. Three of those four points were costly attack errors by UMES.
The victory was sweet revenge for the Bison. UMES won both of the regular season meetings last year. The two teams will meet again on Nov. 4 in Burr Gym for Howard's Senior Night.
