Howard Volleyball Defeats Norfolk State in Three Sets

Norfolk, VA (October 13, 2018) --- Howard University (HU) volleyball continued its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) winning streak on Friday after defeating Norfolk State University (NSU) in three sets, 28-26, 25-16, 25-20.

The Bison (12-9, 5-0 MEAC)  and the Spartans (2-13, 1-14 MEAC) saw an exciting and competitive first set. Both teams were close in scoring up until the Bison went on a six point run that put them up 14-8. The Spartans were down but certainly not out. NSU responded with a four point run that brought them within two of HU, 14-12. For the remainder of the set it was a back and forth of Howard pulling away with the lead and Norfolk coming right back to stay in the match. The set went on to extend beyond the 25 points needed. The Bison eventually took the set, 28-26.

The first half of set two was tight between the teams. A kill by senior Courtney Dalton put the Bison on the board first. There were multiple lead changes until a kill by Indira Dandridge off an assist from Tamia Dockery broke the 12-12 tie bringing the score to 13-12. The Bison never looked back. HU won the set, 25-16.

The Spartans came into set three ready for whatever the Bison had to give; however, it would not be enough. The effort by NSU kept the game interesting but HU's explosive play once again put the game away for them. Howard closed set three, 25-20.

Jurnee Tipton led the Bison with 14 kills, eight digs, and 4 aces. Senior Kira Porter had 11 kills, two blocks, and an ace. Freshman Kailyn Williams stepped up again to contribute 9 kills. Senior setter Tamia Dockery had 38 of Howard's 41 assists. She also had a season high five aces and added three digs. Fola Wilson tallied 14 digs and an assist.

The Bison return to Burr Gym for the next game on Oct. 21. They will face Bethune-Cookman at 1 p.m.
