Howard Volleyball Defeats Delaware State on the Road

Dover, DE (October 5, 2018) --- Howard University (HU) volleyball (10-9 overall, 3-0 conference) strikes again defeating Delaware State (2-7 overall, 0-2 conference) in its third straight Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) win.

Delaware was simply no match for the skill and explosion the Bison brought to Dover. Howard was on the board first. An assist from setter Tamia Dockery resulted in a kill by Courtney Dalton. In the opening set, Howard was .438 on the attack. The Hornets were restricted to .077 attack percentage. The set remained close within the first 14 points. A series of Hornet errors and plays made by the Bison put Howard up 19-14. The Hornets could not catch up after the five point gap. The Bison took the set, 25-18.

The Bison began the second set with the opening point. Unlike the first set, the Hornets were unable to bring the game within distance. Both teams saw lower attack percentages in the second set. HU had .257 to DSU's .026. Keeping the lead from the start,  Howard won the set, 25-16.

The Hornets were able to get on the board first in the third set; however, the momentum was short lived. Once the Bison scored they went up 6-3. Delaware made an honorable effort to keep the game close but the Bison were in a rhythm that could not be disrupted. Howard led by as much as 10 points before closing the set and the game, 25-18. On the attack they were .406 to Delaware's .154.

For the game the Bison had 99 total attacks, 47 kills, 15 service errors and 11 errors. Marcelle Butler led the team with 12 kills and an assist. Kira Porter posted nine kills, four aces and a block. Jurnee Tipton returned to the court after an accident in last week's game. She had eight kills. Tamia Dockery tallied 37 assists, four kills, and four digs. Fola Wilson had 14 digs and an assist. Freshman Antonia Kearney contributed seven digs and an ace. Jurnee Farrell added six digs.

HU has its next road game on Sunday. They will face MEAC preseason favorite University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES). UMES is currently undefeated in conference play and 4-0 at home.
