WASHINGTON (October 12, 2017) – After a third-place finish at American University (AU), Coach
Nicholas Askew and the Men's & Women's Swimming & Diving teams host its first home meets at Burr Pool.
Friday's meet marks the second meet between and AU and Howard with the first race kicking off at 6 p.m. Saturday's action versus the Chowan University (CU) Hawks and George Washington (GW) Colonials begins at 1 p.m.
MEET PREVIEW
AMERICAN
AU finished ahead of the Bison to open the 2017-18 season with the Eagles taking a second place finish at the Potomac Relay Invitational held at the Reeves Aquatic Complex. The women scored more than 80 points higher than Howard at the relay meet, with the men finishing four points head.
CHOWAN
CU will only compete on the women's side Saturday afternoon. Chowan opened its campaign with a second-place finish at the Converse Women's Invite. The squad took part in the seven-team tourney and held the No. 2 spot on both days (Oct. 6-7). They compete in the Division II Conference Carolinas.
GEORGE WASHINGTON
Last weekend, GW competed at the Florida International (FIU) Fall Classic where the men finished second out of five squads, while the ladies placed fourth out of seven. Peter Nachtwey was honored as Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week after scoring a combined 25 points between two diving events.
HOWARD
Both squads finished third out of four teams in the season opening Potomac Relay.
On the women's side, they are led by three seniors:
Danielle Brown,
Summer Lewis and
Kayla Walker. A year ago, Brown set a new school record in the 200M Butterfly. Other notable swimmer to watch is junior
KaSandra Kaplan.
The men consist of 11 newcomers and no seniors. The young Bison are led by juniors
Alexander Barnes,
Farion Cooper, Mensa Eggleston,
Nicholas Haughton, and
Mark McCluskey.
THE LAST RACE
HU displayed a strong outing at the Potomac Relay Invitational where they finished third overall.
Howard's most outstanding performance came during the men's 200 freestyle relay, where McCluskey and Barnes teamed with
Sidrell Williams and Maalik Nixon to win the event by .04 seconds over favored George Mason.
Furthermore, Christian Nickolas and Austin Rogers became the first male and female divers to compete in more than two decades. They finished seventh and fourth, respectively.
THEME
This weekend's theme is Breast Cancer Awareness and in honor of this occasion, the team will have pink balloons displayed through Burr Pool. Midway through the events, the team will honor those loss to cancer with a moment of silence.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
HU's next competitive meet will take place at Burr Pool when Mount St. Mary's and Virginia Military Institute head to town.
Friday's (Nov. 3) meet against The Mount starts 6 p.m. Saturday's (Nov. 4) action versus VMI begins 1 p.m.
