BALTIMORE, Md. – The Howard University swimming and diving teams kicked off 2017 in a dual meet against CCSA foe UMBC on Saturday afternoon. The men fell 110-119, while the women dropped a 112-95 decision.
"We had a strong effort against the toughest team on our schedule," head coach Nicholas Askew said. "Our times are on pace in n several races, compared to last year. This is a big sign that the team is faster and stronger, showing significant progress."
The Bison were also scheduled to face Vermont at the meet but the Catamounts were unable to make it due to the tragedy at the Fort Lauderdale airport.
"Howard and UMBC came together to send support to Vermont and wish the team success in the rest of its season," stated Askew.
Junior Kayla Walker and sophomore Nicholas Haughton provided the best performances of the day for Howard. Walker won the 500 freestyle event in a time of 5:54.46. Haughton swam his 500 freestyle race in 5:04.81 to claim the top spot.

Don Brazelton picked up second-place finishes in the 100 freestyle (50.86) and 100 backstroke (55.89)
- Sophomore
Susanna Reese touched the wall second in the 50 freestyle (25.76) and 100 freestyle (57.16)
- Senior
TJ Miller was second and recorded the seventh fastest time in school history in the 200 butterfly after completing the race in 2:02.12
