Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Howard University volleyball team picked up its fourth three-set victory (25-9, 25-19, 25-13) of the season after defeating Loyola (Md.) in Burr Gymnasium on Tuesday night.
The Bison improved to 9-3 overall, their best start since the 2013 season, and extended its win-streak to five games. The Greyhounds fell to 3-5 overall.
Howard hit a season-best .478, making only five miscues on 67 attempts. The Bison held the Greyhounds to a .075 hitting percentage.
Junior Khaila Donaldson was the only player on either team to reach double figures in kills with a match-high 18. She also had a .615 hitting percentage with just two errors on 26 swings.
Senior Katherine Broussard added 11 digs and three service aces to the stat sheet. Sophomore Tamia Dockery notched 27 assists, while senior Morgan Marlbrough tallied 14 digs.
Howard started the match on an 8-2 run, which made Loyola call its first timeout. The two teams traded service errors and Donaldson laid down three kills to extend the lead to 17-8 for another Loyola timeout. Out of the break, Broussard served an ace, followed by a kill from sophomore Courtney Dalton, who also joined classmate Olubunmi Okunade for a block. Howard scored the final four points of the set with the last tally coming on an ace by senior Janaya Hampton.
The Greyhounds kept it close to start the second set as they trailed by one, 12-11. However, Loyola needed to use a timeout as the Bison pulled away, thanks in part to a trio of errors by the visitors and Donaldson's kill to go up 18-12. Freshman Kira Porter got her first kill in a Howard uniform before Okunade closed the set with a spike.
The Bison opened the final set with a slight 7-5 edge. Howard picked up the pace as it went on a 10-5 run for a 17-10 advantage and Loyola timeout. The Bison posted the next three points on two kills by Donaldson and an ace from Broussard, which sent the Greyhounds back to their bench. Howard allowed Loyola to only score three more times and Donaldson's kill ended the match.
Howard will take part in the Penn State Classic this weekend, its final regular season tournament.
