The Howard University men's basketball team kicks off the 2016-17 season at perennial powers Michigan on November 11 and Marquette on November 14 in the opening round of the 2K Classic. 
 
The Bison will also take on locals Georgetown (11/26), American University (12/3), Maryland (12/7) and George Washington (12/10), marking the first time in school history that they have played all four locals in the same season. Each of the games will be on the "road" with the Terrapins being a first-time Howard opponent.
 
Howard will finally get to play on the Burr Gymnasium floor when it hosts Jacksonville State on December 14, the beginning of the three-game homestand with includes Shenandoah (12/16) and Central Penn (12/18) in a six-day span.
 
The schedule also includes road games at Old Dominion (12/22) and VCU (12/27), along with Ivy League opponents Harvard (12/30) and Columbia (1/7).
 
The Bison, who return all five starters, including senior guard James "J-Byrd" Daniel, III, who led the nation in scoring with over 27 points per game last season, open Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play on January 4 when they host Florida A&M.
 
"With all five of our starters returning and the improved depth that we have, we wanted to put together a challenging schedule and I think we have," said Howard head coach Kevin Nickelberry of the schedule, one of the toughest in over a decade. "It is by far the most challenging since I have been here. You start with the likes of majors in Michigan, Marquette, Georgetown and Maryland. Then you have some strong mid-majors in ODU, VCU, GW and Harvard, not to mention what we think is going to be a tough MEAC schedule. This will help us see where we are as a program."
