NEW HAVEN, Conn. (November 2, 2026) --- Senior guard
Cam Gillus (Falls Church, Va.) picked up where he left off last season, scoring a team-high 16 points while fellow classmate guard
Cedric Taylor III (Atlanta) and junior transfer
James Brown (Aurora, Ill.) each added 11 points but it was not enough to defeat Yale as the Howard University men's basketball team fell, 72-62, in the season opener at the John Lee Amphitheater.
The Bison took an early 9-4 lead, but the Bulldogs began to settle in and control the tempo for the rest of the way.
Yale led, 40-28, at the half as the Bison were hampered by fouls. Taylor, the team's leading scorer from a year ago, was limited to only 24 minutes before fouling out.
Gillus nailed 4-of-6 from the three-point line while also adding four steals.
Brown, a 6-foot-10 center from UNC, showed why he is going to be an important factor for the Bison this season. In addition to his 11 points, he grabbed seven rebounds, dealt out a team-high three assists while also recording four blocks and four steals.
Sharpshooting senior guard
Alex Cotton (Carrollton, Texas) had an off game, missing 9-of-his-11 shots, including going 1-of-8 from his specialty area, the three-point arc.
The Bison held an advantage in several statistical categories, but they were not able to overcome the deficit at the foul line where Yale connected on 19-of-22 while Howard made only 7-of-16 attempts.
The Bulldogs (1-0) were led by Riley Fox 19 (points) and Jordan Braithwaite (17 points).
NEXT UP: Howard (0-1) stays on the road, facing Braves of Alcorn State in a nonconference HBCU matchup Thursday (Nov. 5) in Lorma, Miss. Tipoff at 7 p.m.
