Box Score 2 PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The Howard University softball team swept its doubleheader meeting with Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday, April 30 at Hawk Field. The Lady Bison took the first game, 5-1, before closing out the day with a 15-6 victory.
Game One
Senior RHP Janessa Flynn (6-15) picked up the win after a complete-game, four-hit, one-run, five-strikeout performance. UMES' Kaitlyn Hitch (2-9) was charged with the loss after 3.0 innings of work, in which she allowed five hits and four runs.
The Lady Bison struck first in the top of the second inning after junior Imani Ballard scored on a wild pitch and freshman Alannah Baiyina singled up the middle to plate a run for a 2-0 lead.
Howard tacked on a pair of runs in the third another wild pitch sent redshirt senior Al'Asia Davis scampering home. Next up, Ballard's ground out to the shortstop was able to bring redshirt senior Jasmine Gammons in as the squad went ahead 4-0.
The Hawks responded in the bottom of the fourth when Emily Diseroad homered to left center, bringing the score to 4-1.
The Lady Bison brought the final score to 5-1 on a double to left field by junior Milan Poindexter.
Game Two
Senior righty Dominique Lawrence (1-1) earned her first victory of the 2016 season after tossing 7.0 innings, giving up eight hits and six runs to go along with four strikeouts. Adrienne Guerra (9-16) was tagged with the setback after 3.0 innings in the circle for seven hits, six runs (two earned) and four strikeouts.
The Hawks jumped out to a quick 5-0 advantage on four hits in the bottom of the first, highlighted by a three-run homer from Ciara Schnyder.
Howard put up six runs in the third, starting with Baiyina getting on base off a single and eventually stealing home for the team's first tally. Gammons' double and Poindexter's single plated a pair a runs. Ballard tallied an extra-base hit to bring in two more and Henderson's RBI single closed out the inning with a 6-5 lead for the visitors.
Redshirt freshman Tiyanna Stewart singled to left field in the fourth to put one on for the Lady Bison. Davis followed up with a huge two-run home run to over the fence to push the edge to 8-5.
The Lady Bison ran away with the game in the sixth. After a single by Gammons loaded the bases, Lawrence and Poindexter earned back-to-back walks to add two runs to the scoreboard. Ballard tallied an RBI single and Lawrence made it home on an error by the pitcher to extend the lead to 12-5.
Howard kept the barrage coming, adding three runs in the seventh on a single and two-run homer to left center by Poindexter.
UMES managed to score once more in the final frame but it wasn't enough as the Lady Bison claimed a 15-6 decision.
As a team, Howard connected on 21 hits through the doubleheader and had seven players with at least two hits on the day.
The Lady Bison will play their final regular season game on Sunday, May 1. The series finale with UMES is set to begin at 12 p.m.
