Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Howard University softball team was swept in a doubleheader with Delaware State on Saturday, April 23 at the Nationals Youth Academy. The Lady Bison are 7-31 overall and 3-11 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference action, while the Hornets improve to 22-16 and 15-2 in the league.
Saturday served as Senior Day for Howard's four members of the 2016 class.
Game One
Janessa Flynn (5-14) was charged with the loss after tossing her fifth complete-game of the season, allowing seven hits and six runs (four earned) to go along with a pair of strikeouts. DSU's Nicole Brock (9-5) threw 7.0 innings of six-hit, one-run, seven-strikeout ball to take the win.
Al'Asia Davis drove a double through right field in the bottom of the second and a throwing error by the third baseman allowed her to scamper home, giving Howard an early 1-0 lead.
The Hornets responded in the third with a fielder's choice RBI to knot the game at 1-1. In the fourth, Nicole Gazzola drove in a pair of runs to go ahead 3-1 thanks to a single to center field.
DSU broke the game open in the sixth, starting with a single to left field from Sandy Hawthorne to plate one. Next up, Chloe Oro brought a run in off her groundout, followed by a double from Gazzola for a final 6-1 decision.
Davis led Howard after going 2-for-3 and hitting .422 in the outing.
Game Two
RHP
Tara Castellanos (1-5) was tagged with the setback after letting in five runs (three earned) on four hits. Howard also saw
Dominique Lawrence and
Alex Flynn in the circle as they each pitched in relief.
The second game of the day was commanded by DSU as it scored a combined 13 runs in the first two innings, including three home runs.
In the fifth,
Alannah Baiyina singled to get on base before stealing second. She tallied the only run for the Lady Bison when she stole third and rounded the corner to get home on a DSU throwing error.
Al'Asia Davis,
Milan Poindexter and Lawrence each tallied a hit on the day.
The teams will play their final game of the series on Sunday, April 24 at noon.
