Landover, MD---Dominique Bynum Cooper highlighted the women's and men's performances in the MEAC Indoor championships this past weekend by not only winning her event, but making history in the process. She captured the shot put with an effort of 13.63 meters and thus becomes the school record holder and first woman in school history to win the event in the MEAC at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field championship at the PG Sports and Learning Center.
"Dominique is a special athlete," praised Howard head coach Marc Harrison. "She was a state champion long jumper in New Jersey and she also hurdled. She continues to be a humble, hard working leader in the program and it's no surprise that Coach Latham (Nicholas Latham, the throw coach) has gotten her to the top of the MEAC.
The program continues to grow as was evidenced by the performances at the championship. After many impressive performances on Thursday and Friday, the Bison continued to score in the finals for running events and throws.
Michelle Cole finished third with a time of 56.27 in the 400 meter finals and Kahe Kaye placed eighth in the 200 meter finals with a time of 22.36.
Both the men and women's 4x400 meter relay teams also scored; the women's team placing 6th and the men 5th.
As for the team's throwers Cheyenne Bellerand finished in 5th with a throw of 13.11 meters.
As for the men, Daniel Stokes and Rajae Gayle also placed in the shot put. Gayle placed third with a throw of 16.03 meters while Stokes took 7th with a throw of 14.37 meters:
"We made some progress; we will continue to work hard and prepare for ECACs and IC4As," said Harrison. "Outdoor season looks very promising. It's always great to perform well at MEACS. A lot of the coaches are friends as well as adversaries. We continually receive praise for the direction that the program is going."
