Foul Trouble Hampers Bison in Loss To Hawaii

Box Score Honolulu, Hawaii---James "J-Byrd" Daniel, III poured in a team-high 29 points but it was not enough to offset a combination of balanced scoring, foul trouble and fatigue as Howard fell, 92-59 to the University of Hawaii at the Stephen Sheriff Arena.

The Bison (7-8) came out strong and battled the Rainbow Warriors (11-2) in the first 8 minutes.  Then Roderick Bobbitt and Valdes too over and led their team on a 17-0 run that opened a 30-10 lead.  Bobbitt and Aaron Valdes combined for seven three pointers as Hawaii connected on 7 of 10 beyond the arc.

The Bison, on the scoring Daniel and Solomon "Solo" Mangham, were able to cut the lead in half during a 16-6 run that got them to within 36-26.

The Rainbow Warriors would counter with a run of their own to take a 50-36 lead to the locker room.

The undermanned and undersized Bison were unable to get rebounds and got no production from anyone other than Daniel and Mangham, who combined for 30 of their team's first half 36 points.

In the second half, Howard was able to cut into the deficit early by playing some tough defense.  The Bison opened with a 6-0 spurt in the first two minutes to reduce the deficit to 50-40.  But that is as close as they would get as Stefan Jankovic, Bobbitt, Quincy Amith and Valdes led their team on a 22-8 run that put the game away.

"They did a great job of running three and four players at J-Byrd in the second half," noted Howard head coach Kevin Nickelberry.  "He began to wear down so I began to substitute for him but there was little margin for error right because of the lack of depth."

The Bison appeared to tire and it impacted on their shooting, rebounding and even at the free throw line where they came into the game ranked among the nation's best at 75 percent.  The Rainbow Warriors won the rebounding battle, 48-26, with 19 coming off the offensive glass.  They also forced the Bison in 5 of 28 shooting.  At the free throw line, they made 16 of 27 for a season-low 59 percent.

Compounding the problems was their foul trouble where three players were disqualified and the possible loss of another starter to injury.

"When Mangham went out of the game with an ankle injury, it changed things," said Nickeleberry.  "We had people playing out of position so we really couldn't run anything.  Cameron (Lewis), Tyler (Stone) and Jalen (Jones) all fouled out and it left us with Damon (Miller) and Kofi (Andoh) playing the 4 and the 5 position.  And when you are down by 10 or 12 and trying to come back on the road in Hawaii, it is a recipe for disaster."   Mangham was taken to the hospital and his status has yet to be determined.

Daniel matched his 29-point per game average that leads the nation, but the junior sharpshooter, missed 16 of 24 although he made 5 of 10 from the three-point line.  Mangham finished with 13, 10 coming in the first 20 minutes.

Hawaii was by Bobbitt with a game-high 31, Aaron Valdes with a triple double of 16 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists and Quincy Smith with 15.

NEXT UP: The Bison return home to host Cornell on January 6 at 7 pm in Burr Gymnasium.
