Bison Try To End Season on a Winning Note

Dover, DE—It is one of the more intriguing matchups of the year.  Howard University at Delaware State in the regular season finale.  The Bison (1-9, 1-6 in the MEAC) are looking to pick up their second win of the season while the Hornets (0-10, 0-7 in the MEAC) are trying to get their first win.  The game will be webcast live on www.whbc963hd3.com.  Trevin Jones and Michael Lindo will call all the action.

It all gets underway at 2 pm on Saturday at Alumni Stadium.  There are so many similarities between the two programs.  Each has had problems scoring this season.  Each has had inconsistency and/or injuries on the offensive line.  And both are starting freshman quarterbacks.

"When you look at it, the two teams are very much alike," noted Delaware State first year head coach Kenny Carter.  "There are a lot of similarities.  But the bottom line is that they have what we want: a win."

Delaware State is coming off a 27-6 loss to the Aggies of North Carolina A&T last Saturday in a game in which they hung tough until a late Aggie burst.

The Bison, on the other hand, played North Carolina Central tough early, taking a 3-0 lead before the Eagles exploded for 17 second quarter points to take a 20-3 lead at halftime.

"Whether it is fatigue or youth or depth, we have problems finishing games" explained Howard head coach Gary Flea" Harrell.  "We have to find a way in this game to play four quarters.  DelState is going to come out strong.  They know that it is Senior Day for them and I am sure that they would like nothing than to defeat the Bison to end the season."

One of the advantages that Howard has is the play of its defense.  The Bison have had one of their best seasons in terms of takeaways, in recent memory.  Defensive linemen Damon Gresham Chisholm , Tommy Boozer, Marquese Blanchard have done a nice job up front while linebackers David Lee and Jalen Day have been consistent all season.  But it is the play of the quartet of Kenneth Russ, Travon Hunt, Craig Johnson and Jacob Bennett, who have combined for 15 takeaways on the season.

That factor, along with the outstanding punting by senior John Fleck has been a major plus.  Fleck is averaging over 41 yards per punts and has been especially effective in reversing the field.  Fleck has 18 punts of 50 yards or more, including a school record 83-yard effort.
