The Howard University men's basketball team will kick off what looks to be a big weekend in athletics at Howard University when it hosts Medgar Evers College in the 2015-16 home opener. Tipoff is slated for Friday at 6 pm in Burr Gymnasium.
The Bison are coming off losses to Atlantic 10 opponents, the University of Massachusetts and to Big 10 member, Rutgers University and played more than respectable.
Howard played both games on the road as part of the Men Who Speak Up Event. In the opener against UMass, the Bison led by as many as 12 before the Minutemen were able to rally late on some deft free throw shooting down the stretch.
Howard was paced by the junior backcourt of James "J-Byrd" Daniel and James "JT" Miller, who combined for 51 points between them against UMass.
The Dynamic Duo, which is one of the top backcourts in the country, came back less than 24 hours later and battled the Scarlet Knights at the RAC before losing by 12. In that game, Daniel, who topped the 1,000-point mark in his first two seasons, tallied 21 to lead all scorers while Miller and
Damon Collins, another junior, added 14 and 12, respectively.
This will be the first meeting between the two schools as the Bison look for their first win.
The Howard women's volleyball team will also be looking to make its mark when it starts play in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. The Bison, who captured the North Division regular season title, are the Number 1 seed in their division entering the tournament. Howard takes on South Carolina State on Friday at 1 pm. Should they win, they will advance to the semifinal round on Saturday. The championship will take place on Sunday at and will be televised on ESPNU
Also on tap will the women's swimming and diving team who will take on rival North Carolina A&T in the Burr Pool at 6 pm on Friday.
