Softball Unable To Snap Skid Against UMBC

ELLICOTT CITY, MD --- Even with a solid first game performance, the Howard softball team was swept in doubleheader action against Maryland Baltimore County on Wednesday afternoon. The Lady Bison fell to the Retrievers 10-6 and 10-0 (5 innings), dropping their overall record to 1-20. The Retrievers improved to 22-11 after the two-game set.

Game 1 saw Howard match its season high for runs scored (6) which it achieved during two of the team's Rebel Spring Games last month against (Siena and Saint Peter's). The Lady Bison would need all of them to stay in the game, as UMBC raced out to a 4-0 lead after the first inning on a combination of singles and Howard errors.

Howard responded in the second with its best inning of the year, a five-run explosion that gave the Lady Bison a 5-4 lead. The output was highlighted by a game-tying, three-run home run by sophomore Jasmine Gammons, her third of the season. Freshman Alex Flynn added a late-inning RBI single to give Howard the lead.

The Retrievers quickly tied the game in the third and took a 6-5 lead in the fourth on a RBI double but Howard would knot the game up again in the fifth after another home run, this one by Flynn.

Over the next two innings, though, UMBC's offense continued to produce while Howard's failed to do so. UMBC would score four runs on four hits while HU could only muster one hit and had their side retired in the sixth.

The Lady Bison's offensive struggles would continue through Game 2, as HU was shut out for the fifth time this season. The team managed only two hits and was retired in order in three of the five innings while UMBC would score one run in the first inning and put up five in the third and four in the fifth.

HU will return to MEAC play over the weekend with a three-game series against conference opponent Coppin State. The team's doubleheader will be held on Saturday, April 5 beginning at 1:00 pm, with the final game being played on Sunday, April 6 at 12 noon.
