WLAX Downed By Detroit In Conference Action

WASHINGTON, DC --- Five Howard women's lacrosse players scored goals but the Lady Bison were unable to earn their first-ever Atlantic Sun conference win in a 17-5 defeat against the University of Detroit Mercy on Sunday afternoon at Greene Stadium.

Howard (1-11, 0-2 A-Sun) got scores from senior Courtland Lackey, juniors Jaymie Cox & Michaela Jupiter and freshmen Tianna Clark & Asiyah Frank. Cox and sophomore Nychol Stephens each grabbed a pair of ground balls and senior Cynithia Smalls had the lone Lady Bison assist.

Overall, HU struggled with creating offensive opportunities. Detroit (2-11, 1-2 A-Sun) forced Howard into ten more turnovers (21-11) and the Lady Bison struggled converting on clear attempts, advancing into their zone 53 percent of the time (8-of-17) in the game and 25 percent (2-of-8) in the first period.

Frank scored HU's first goal on a free position shot with 4:52 to go in the first half to stop a 10-0 Detroit run. A pair of Titan goals put Howard behind 12-1 at the break. Clark and Jupiter netted unassisted goals at the 22:13 and 15:10 marks but Howard still trailed 15-3.

Cox and Lackey scored back-to-back late in the second. Smalls set up Cox's score with 7:54 remaining and Lackey put in her goal with less than two minutes left in the game.

Howard will play its final home game of the season and honors its two seniors on Saturday, April 19 at 1:00 pm against conference member Elon.
