Box Score HAMPTON, VA --- In the final game of the three-game series between the Howard softball team and Hampton University, the Lady Bison failed to string together back-to-back wins after a 7-4 loss to the Lady Pirates on Sunday afternoon at the Lady Pirates Softball Stadium.
Howard (2-28, 1-11 MEAC) tied their season-high for hits – set last game against Hampton – but could not replicate the six runs they scored in the win over the Lady Pirates (15-17, 6-3 MEAC).
Junior Briana Banks, sophomore Dominique Lawrence and freshman Alex Flynn led Howard in hits, going a combined 7-for-14 at the plate. Senior Ashley Turner (2 RBI), junior Jenny Ly (1 RBI) and Banks (1 RBI) drove in the runs for the Lady Bison.
Hampton got on the scoreboard in the first after forcing a walk by Flynn with the bases loaded. After a pair of scoreless frames, Turner drove in sophomore Jasmine Gammons on a RBI single to tie the game at 1-1.
The Lady Pirates out take a 2-1 lead after a single and Howard throwing errors turned into a scored runner in the fifth. Hampton then exploded for five runs in the sixth to put the Lady Bison into a 7-1 hole.
Howard nearly earned all five allowed runs back in the top of the seventh. After a walk by Al-Asia Davis and singles from Lawrence and Gammons, Ly brought in Davis on a sacrifice to shortstop. Turner batted next and reached on a fielding error, which brought in Milan Poindexter, who was pinch running for Lawrence.
Banks hit a two-out RBI single to bring in Gammons and cut Hampton's deficit to 7-4 but the rally would fall three runs short after Flynn was put out trying to score from home on the next play.
Howard will play one of its last two non-conference doubleheaders on Tuesday, April 15 as the Lady Bison take on Towson University. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
