Washington, DC--Justin Black scored six of his game-high 20 points in overtime, including the game-winning three pointer with 1.2 seconds remaining to give Morgan State a hard-fought, 68-66 win over Howard University in a MEAC men's game at Burr Gymnasium.
Following a tip-n by
Prince Okoroh on a James "J-Bird" Daniel that gave the Bison (7-24, 5-11 in the MEAC) a 66-65 lead with 9.2 seconds, the Bears (13-15, 11-5 in the MEAC) advanced the ball past half-court and called a timeout with 4.2 seconds remaining.
Following the timeout, Black received the inbounds, took a dribble, stepped back and buried a three pointer from the left side with 1.2 left on the clock. Howard used its final timeout to set up a play, but a Daniel shot failed to draw iron and Morgan State escaped with the win.
"Justin Black made an unbelievable shot," said Howard Coach
Kevin Nickelberry. "I was proud of the way these guys battled. I feel bad for them because we deserved to win. We never quit and played well again against one of the top teams in the MEAC."
The game had the feel of a tournament game as both teams engaged in a physical battled throughout. Neither team led by more than four, but Morgan State led, 36-35 at intermission.
The Bison were able to stay close due to the scoring of freshman forward
Solomon Mangham, who tallied 11 of his career-high 22 points in the first half. The Bears countered with scoring of Black (12 points) and Anthony Hubbard (10), who combined for 22 of their team's first half points.
Points were hard to come by for both teams in the second half, but the veteran Bears used their experience and muscle to open the game's biggest lead at 56-48 with 8:08 remaining. Blake Bozeman scored all 10 of his points during the stretch that gave Morgan State the short-lived advantage.Â
But the resilient Bison refused to go away and Mangham,
Kofi Andoh and Daniel collaborated to send the game into an extra frame.
"We got effort and production from several places," said Nickelberry. "When
Keon Hill at 5-8 went up and grabbed the rebound from among all that size, it inspired the team. I am really proud of the effort of this group."
Morgan State was led by Black's 20, Hubbard's 13 off the bench and Bozeman's 10.
Howard was led by Mangham, who hit in eight of his nine field goal attempts, including six of seven from beyond the arc. He also grabbed seven rebounds. Daniel chipped in with 13, nine below his season average. He missed 12 of 16 but dished out a career-high five assists and recorded three steals.
Oliver Ellison scored only four points, but his four blocked shots and his work on Morgan State's 7-2 senior center Ian Chiles, who was held to eight points after averaging almost 20 the past two games.
