Coppin State Uses Long Ball To Down Howard

Baltimore, MD-  Coppin State used a three-point barrage to shoot down Howard, 86-69 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men's game at the Physical Education Center.

The Eagles (10-18, 7-9 in the MEAC) set the tone early as Andre Armstrong led the way with 14 points that included four of eight from the three-point line.  Michael Murray complemented Armstrong with 11 points on medium-range shots as Coppin led 36-28 at the half.

The Bison (7-23, 5-10 in the MEAC) got 10 points Prince Okoroh in the first 20 minutes, but they missed the presence of leading scorer James "J-Bird" Daniel, who was forced to sit 11 minutes after picking up his second foul.  With Daniel on the bench, the Bison turned the ball over 13 times and Coppin State accepted the gifts by converting them into 13 points.

The Eagles made sure that Howard would not stage a comeback as Armstrong, Daquan Brickhouse and Sterling Smith combined to fuel a 9-0 run to start the second half that gave their team a 45-28 lead that all but decided the outcome.

Coppin State hit on seven of 13 from beyond the arc in the second half for 58 percent and 16 of 29 overall (55 percent).  Each time the young Bison tried to cut into the lead and make it a workable margin, Coppin State had an answer.

Daniel led his team with 23 points, 16 in the second half.  Okoroh chipped in with 18.  Tyler Stone recorded his first career double double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.  Oliver Ellsion had another big day rebounding, collecting a career best 13 as the Bison won the rebounding battle, 43-31.  Howard also had its highest assist total, dating back 20 games, but it was negated by 22 turnovers.

Coppin State placed four players in double figures:  Armstrong led his team with 23, Brickhouse added 20, Murray contributed 19 and Dallas Gary scored 10.  The Eagles had 22 assists on 28 field goals.
