Softball Goes 1-3 On Opening Weekend

WASHINGTON, DC --- Playing in their first games of the 2014 season, the Howard softbal team finished with an 1-3 record at the George Washington Colonials Tournament this weekend at the GW Softball Field.

HOWARD 2, GW 1 (MARCH 7)
Freshman Alex Flynn pitched a complete game in the Lady Bison's first victory of the season, a 2-1 win over the host Colonials in the tournament opener. Flynn only allowed one run during seven innings of five-hit, four-strikeout ball.

Junior infielder Jenny Ly had the best performance of the game, going 1-for-2 with a RBI triple, a walk and a run scored as she was involved in both of Howard's scores.

After subbing for freshman Deja Henderson at third base in the top of the third, Ly would draw a walk, advance to second on a passed ball, move to third on a strikeout-throwout, and score on a Dominique Lawrence RBI single.

In the fourth, Ly would hit her triple with two outs and drive in Al'Asia Davis to make the score 2-0.

GW would add a run in the sixth but could not gather one in the 7th to tie or pass the Lady Bison.

WAGNER 8, HOWARD 5 (MARCH 7)
HU's second game of the day against Wagner College provided much more offense than its first.

The Lady Bison ended the first inning in great shape thanks to a four hit, five-run explosion in the bottom of the frame.

A solo leadoff home run by freshman Imani Ballard tied the game at 1-1. After taking the lead on a bases loaded walk, HU would drive in three more runs to tak a 5-1 lead.

The Seahawks would answer in the next half inning with three runs of their own, but Howard would still lead 5-4 after the second inning.

After a scoreles third, Wagner would threaten HU's lead and succeed to surpass the Lady Bison by adding four runs in the fourth.

Howard would literally run out of time to try and regain the lead as the game would be called in the fifth due to darkness.

Ballard's homer was her only hit in three at-bats while four other Lady Bison recorded hits, including a pair of 2-for-2 nights (Henderson, Anasia Stinson).

GW 6, HOWARD 1 (MARCH 8)
Stinson continued her stellar play at the plate from Friday's Wagner game (2-for-2) with a 3-for-3 performance against GW in their second game in as many days.

Henderson would score the team's only run on a fifth inning sacrifice by Inaya Norman.

GW would score in runs in the first, third and fourth innings to put the game out of reach.

WAGNER 9, HOWARD 0 (MARCH 8)
In the final game of the tournament, HU unfortunately found itself in the midst of a no-hitter from Seahawks freshman McKaleigh Goodale in a 9-0 loss that was called in five innings due to the deficit rule.

Flynn would bookend her opening game win with a tough outing, allowing nine earned runs and eight hits in three innings of work.

The Lady Bison will travel to Winter Haven, FL next week to take part in the Rebel Spring Games, playing 10 games in less than a week. HU will open the RSG with a 9:00 am matchup against Bucknell University on Monday, March 10.
