The Bison (4-3) should be prepared for an up-and-down, fast paced game after holding off Gwynedd Mercy, 96-83 in double overtime this past Saturday.
But Howard head coach
Kevin Nickelberry, who expressed his disappointment over the team's play, has a different perspective.
"If we play the same against Duquesne that we did against Gwynedd, there is going to be a problem," said Nickelberry. "This team is a better team. They like to get up and down the court and force you to play their style. That is not what we want we want to do. We have to get back to our style of basketball, defensive minded, gritty and controlling the pace of the game. We have to set the tone early."
Howard played without leading scorer, James "J-Byrd" Daniel, III (16 points per game), who sat out with a thigh contusion. He will be a game time decision.
In his absence, sophomore guard James "JT" Miller and senior forward James "JC" Carlton picked up the slack. Miller poured in a career-high 33 points, seven coming in the second overtime while Carlton recorded not only his career high, but his first double double for the Bison, 26 points and 13 rebounds.
Other players made solid contributions as well.
Keon Hill, a red-shirt sophomore guard, started for Daniel and responded with 10 points on 3 of 4 shooting, 2 of 2 from three-point range.
Damon Collins, a sophomore guard, chipped in with seven points while senior reserve guard
Jared Norsworthy continued his solid play with eight points and five rebounds.
The Dukes (2-1) coming into the game, dropping an 84-81 home loss to NJIT. Duquesne is one of the top scoring teams in the country, putting up 91 points per game, shooting a torrid 52 percent from the field on the season, including 53 percent from the three-point line. The Dukes have four players who average in double figures.
UP NEXT: The Bison open Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play with back-to-back games in a 24-hour period. Howard hosts North Carolina A&T on Saturday at 2 pm in Burr and then they travel to Brooklyn, NY to take on the defending and preseason pick, North Carolina Central in the Big Apple Classic at 6 pm at the Barclays Center.
