Radford, VA--The Howard University men's basketball team will be looking to put together two halves of basketball when it takes on the Highlanders of Radford University at the Dedmon Center. Tipoff is at 7:30 pm and the game will be live streamed on
www.radfordathletics.com It was a tale of two halves. The Bison (1-2) got off to a slow start in the William & Mary game on Tuesday, trailing 33-16 at the half. After shooting only 20 percent in the first half, the team picked things up in the second half forcing the tempo and creating turnovers that allowed them to cut the deficit to five with 4 minutes still left. But a couple of missed shots and botched opportunities allowed the Tribe to hold on for the win.
The key to the second half surge was sophomore guard James "J-Byrd' Daniel, who tallied 14 of his game-high 23 points in the second stanza. Howard comeback and chance for victory were reduced by the absence of James "JC" Carlton, who picked up some early fouls and never was able to contribute. The 6-8 senior transfer finished with six points and 8 rebounds while James "JT" Miller added 8 points.
The Highlanders (0-2) will be looking for their first win of the season after dropping their first two on the road to Richmond and James Madison. Radford is coached by Howard University alum Mike Jones (1990). Jones was a standout and was the starting point guard on the Howard team that posted the most victories in a season. He also served as an assistant coach under former Howard head coach Mike McLeese along with the Bison current head coach,
Kevin Nickelberry, from 1994-97.
Radford is led by Javonte Green who comes into the game averaging 18.0 points and 11.5 rebounds per game.
The two teams have met three times and the Bison hold a 2-1 advantage. They last played in 2003-04 and Radford prevailed, 66-65.
