Daytona Beach, FL---The Howard University will be looking to snap its current three-game losing streak and capture its first MEAC victory of the season when it takes on the 17
th/18
th ranked Wildcats of Bethune Cookman in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference contest at Larry Kelly Field at Municipal Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 pm.
The Bison (1-5, 0-3 MEAC) face a daunting task in taking on the Wildcats in their homecoming. BCU (4-1, 1-0 MEAC) has won two straight MEAC titles and are the preseason favorite to win their third straight. BCU has won five in a row and lead the series, 18-13-2. The Bison last won in 2007.
Howard is coming off a hard-fought 27-22 road loss to North Carolina Central in which it amassed 485 yards of total offense and controlled the clock for 35 minutes. Again, it was senior quarterback
Greg McGhee, who kept his team in it, accounting for almost 400 yards and two TD passes. McGhee leads the team in rushing (86 carries, 450 yards, 8 TDs), passing (110 of 213, 1,142 yards, 5 TDs) and in scoring. He is second on the MEAC all-time career list for total offense with 8,525
But the injury-ravaged defense failed to come up the big stops when it needed to and Howard again came up short.
In BCU, the Bison face a balanced attack on offense and several playmakers on defense. The experienced and deep Wildcats feature Anthony Jordan (71 carries, 276 yards, 4 TDs) and Michael D. Jones (26 carries, 206 yards, a TD) in the rushing attack and the passing combination of Quentin Williams (66 of 101, 836, 5 TDs) to Jhomo Gordon (17 receptions, 176 yards, 1 TD) for its air attack.
Defensively, Tavarus Dantzler (40 tackles, 3.5 for losses), LaBranden Richardson (8.5 tackles for losses, 4 sacks) and Erik Williams (9.0 tackles for losses, 4 sacks) are having all-conference seasons.
Howard will counter with McGhee, running back
Aquanius Freeman (233 yards, 2 TDs) and McGhee's favorite target, Matt Colvin (22 receptions, 17.4 per catch).
Defensively, the Bison are surrendering 430 yards per game, much of it coming through the air. Linebackers
Devin Rollins (60 tackles, 3.0 for losses), who leads the MEAC and
Khari Brown (45 tackles, 3.0 for losses) have been steady all season, but will need help from teammates if Howard can stymie the Wildcats.
Howard punter
John Fleck has been a weapon for Howard all season. The junior from Indianapolis, IN, leads the MEAC in punting and will play a key role in helping the Bison in the game against Bethune Cookman.
NEXT UP: Howard returns home next Saturday to host Florida A&M University for homecoming at 1:05 pm while the Wildcats travel to Savannah, Ga to take on the Tigers of Savannah State.
