Howard Looks For First MEAC Road Wins in Florida Swing

Tallahassee, FL—The Howard University men' basketball team will be looking to build on its recent home win when it takes on Florida A&M University at the Alfred Lawson Gymnasium. It will be Suits and Sneakers Awareness Weekend. All coaches and staff from both teams will wear sneakers in support of the fight against cancer.

The Bison (4-15, 2-2 in the MEAC) rang up their highest point total in two seasons in an 88-55 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore this past Saturday.

Howard was led by freshman James "J-Bird" Daniel, who poured in a game-high 33 points. James "JT" Miller, another freshman guard, came off the bench to contribute 12 points. Their contributions were all the more significant because of their status.

"We have played a number of quality opponents on the road this season, so playing an MEAC opponent is not a huge factor," explained Howard Coach Kevin Nickelberry. "This is a confident group. The big thing is that J-Bird and JT are healthy and as team, this will be the first time this season that we can say that going on the road."

Junior forward Prince Okoroh, the team leader and only non-freshman starter, continued his consistency, scoring 19 points in the win over UMES. But Nickelberry is especially excited about the recent contributions of Tyler Stone and Damion Collins.

"Tyler brings a lot of energy with his ability to keep the ball alive, rebound and block shots," said Nickelberry of his 6-7 freshman, who got his first start against UMES and responded with a career-high 10 points and seven rebounds.

He continued, "Damion is a defensive two guard who creates points off our press and is effective in our zone. They have both figured out their roles with this team."

In the Rattlers (7-12, 3-3 in the MEAC), the Bison face a formidable opponent. FAMU has won three of its last four and they are undefeated at home this season.

"You have to be concerned when it comes to road games in league play," he said. "Last season's game, we hit some free throws to edge out the win (46-45) at their place and I am sure they have not forgotten. I think they are playing better this season because they have seniors and we have seen what happens when teams in this league have that."

FAMU starts four seniors including the MEAC Player of the Week, Jamie Adams, who ranks among the conference leaders in several statistical categories.

Following this game, the Bison will take on the Wildcats of Bethune Cookman at 7:30 pm in Daytona Beach, FL.

Both games will be broadcast live via audio by logging onto hubison.com. Chuck Walton will call all the action.
