Bison Look For First Conference Win in Big Apple Classic

Brooklyn, NY, December 15—The Howard University men's basketball team will be looking to get its first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win when it takes on Delaware State University in the Seventh Annual Big Apple Classic at 6 pm today in the Barclays Center.

The Bison (2-11, 0-1 MEAC) are in the midst of one of the more challenging schedules in recent history.  This will be the fourth of five road games in eight days, including a 79-60 loss at Fordham less than 24 hours ago.  Howard will close out this leg on Tuesday in Lynchburg, VA against Liberty University at 7 pm.

The current  odyssey has been difficult for the young Bison, who feature the second youngest team in college basketball with no seniors and nine freshmen.  It has been compounded by the injury factor.  Leading scorer James "J-Bird" Daniel, has been hobbled by a toe injury.  He played in the loss at Fordham, but struggled, getting into early foul trouble and finishing with 11 points, almost nine under his average.  Head Coach Kevin Nickelberry has ruled him out of today's game.

The team does have a bit of some good news.  Freshman guard James "JT" Miller, who has missed 11 games this season due to a sore knee, returned to the lineup against Fordham and came off the bench to score a team- and career-high 14 points while grabbing seven rebounds.

His return should make up some of the difference when second leading scorer Prince Okoroh, and suddenly emerging freshman forward Solomon Mangham, have off nights as they did in the loss to Fordham.  Okoroh tallied only seven points, half of his average and Mangham totaled nine, after coming off a career best 16 against UCF.  The duo missed 19 of their 24 shot attempts.

The Bison dropped their MEAC opener to Morgan State last Saturday while the Hornets (2-5, 0-1 MEAC) fell to Coppin State on the road last Saturday.

Delaware State won all three games against the Bison last season and four in a row overall, but Howard leads the series, 51-30.

"There is a lot at stake here," said Nickelberry.  "It is a chance for us to go 1-1 in the league and we are getting an opportunity to play in a great arena.  We look to play well and come away with a win."
