Te'Shya Heslip scored in double digits for the fifth straight game to begin her collegiate career in a losing effort as the Howard women's basketball team lost to Rutgers University 69-38 Friday evening at the Rutgers Athletic Center.
Heslip's highlight - 11 points on 5-of-20 shooting and team highs of six rebounds, five steals and four assists - was not enough to push the team against the Scarlet Knight attack, led by sophomores Rachel Hollivay and Kahleah Copper. The pair combined for 49 of Rutgers' 69 points - or 71 percent of the team's offense.
"We fought hard tonight against a quality opponent but playing games like these will toughen us up and make us better heading into MEAC play," said Head Coach Tennille Adams after the game.
"We'll take a look at the film for ways we can improve and make sure we're ready for our next game."
Howard (2-3) struggled to find its rhythm early on as turnovers and missed shots led to a 20-4 run for Rutgers (4-1) to open the contest, including the game's first 10 points.
Howard would post a run of their own, a 17-9 spurt to cut the Scarlet Knight's deficit under double digits, 29-21, with 2:10 remaining in the half.
However, RU would score on its next possession and hold a double digit lead for the rest of the game.
HU will try to even its record in its next game against Saint Francis (PA) on Tuesday, November 26. Tip off for the matchup is slated for 7:00 pm.
