Daniel, Heslip Sweep MEAC Basketball Rookie Honors

WASHINGTON, DC --- The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) announced its weekly basketball award winners today and Howard's James Daniel and Te'Shya Heslip swept the Rookie of the Week honors for the Bison.

Daniel, a 5-11, 155-pound freshman guard from Hampton, VA, scored in double-figures in three non-conference games against Old Dominion, Harvard and Pittsburgh last week.  He recorded 26 points, two rebounds and three steals against Old Dominion. He shot 47-percent from the field (19-of-55) and 75-percent from the free-throw line in the three outings. Daniel has led the Bison (2-3) in scoring in every game this season and was named MEAC Rookie of the week last week as well.

Heslip, a 5-5 redshirt freshman guard from Dumfries, VA, averaged 21.5 PPG, 4.0 RPG and 3.5 APG in a pair of Lady Bison home victories against Jackson State and NJIT. In Howard's home opener against Jackson State, Heslip scored a career-high 27 points in 28 minutes of action. Heslip shot 60 percent (6-of-10) from the field, hit both of her three point attempts and was 13-of-14 from the free throw line. The last Lady Bison player to be named MEAC Rookie of the Week was current sophomore forward Victoria Gonzalez, who earned the honor on January 14 of last season.
